What is coming for ISO 45001

ISO 45001:2018 is the current edition, and nothing changes for your system until a new one is published.

ISO 45001:2018 is the current edition. A revision is expected, and until it is published, your 2018 system and certificate are fully current. Nothing changes until a new edition is published and a transition is announced. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 moved to 2026 editions; ISO 45001 did not.

A table of editions in force: ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 on 2026 editions with a transition to make, ISO 45001 and ISO 22000 on 2018 editions and current. Beside it, a decision for an ISO 45001 system running on the 2018 edition: if no new edition is published, keep running the 2018 system and check again; once a new edition is published, a transition is announced and a gap analysis runs against the published text.EDITIONS IN FORCEISO 90012026 EDITION · TRANSITIONISO 140012026 EDITION · TRANSITIONISO 450012018 EDITION · CURRENTISO 220002018 EDITION · CURRENTYOUR ISO 45001 SYSTEMRUNNING ON THE 2018 EDITIONNEW EDITIONPUBLISHED?NOT YETKEEP RUNNING THE 2018 SYSTEMAUDITS, REVIEW, ACTIONS AS NOWUNTIL THEN, NOTHING CHANGESON PUBLICATIONTRANSITIONANNOUNCEDGAP ANALYSISAGAINST THE TEXTWHAT TO DO WITH A 45001 SYSTEM TODAYKEEP WORKER CONSULTATION RECORDS LIVEKEEP CONTRACTORS INSIDE THE SCOPERUN THE 9001 AND 14001 TRANSITIONSINVESTIGATE INCIDENTS TO ROOT CAUSE

Why the question is being asked

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 both published new editions in 2026, and many holders of all three assume ISO 45001 moved with them. It did not.

If someone offers you an ISO 45001 transition today, ask which edition they are transitioning you to. There is no new edition yet, and a 2018 system that runs well needs no rework against a text that has not been published.

Until then, the useful work on a 45001 system is the same as it was last year: consultation records that show workers were heard, contractors inside the scope, and incident investigations that reach root cause.

What to do with a 45001 system now

  1. 01

    Keep the 2018 system running

Internal audits, management review and corrective action continue on the 2018 edition. That is the edition your certificate is audited against.

    Now
  2. 02

Do the transitions that are real

If you also hold ISO 9001 or ISO 14001, those have 2026 editions and a transition to make. Plan them first.

    Now
  3. 03

Fix what the 2018 edition already asks

Worker consultation evidence and contractor control are where 45001 systems are most often weak, and neither waits on a revision.

    Now
  4. 04

Gap analysis against the new text

When a new edition is published, the gap analysis runs against the published text, clause by clause.

Three certificates, two transitions

A contractor holding ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 is told by a supplier that all three need a transition now.

We check each certificate against the edition in force. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 have 2026 editions and a transition to make. ISO 45001 does not.

The transition work covers the two standards that moved, in one pass, with one internal audit programme. The 45001 system stays on 2018, and its internal audit runs in the same programme as before.

The contractor holds a transition plan for two standards and a 45001 system that did not need rewriting.

Revision questions

Q01

Is ISO 45001 being revised?

A revision is expected. Until a new edition is published, ISO 45001:2018 is the current standard and the one your system is audited against.

Q02

Should we wait for the new edition before certifying?

No. A 2018 certificate is fully current, and existing certificate holders are given a transition period once a new edition is published. A system built and run now is the starting point for any future transition.

Q03

Does ISO 9001:2026 change our ISO 45001 system?

Not the 45001 requirements. If you run an integrated system, shared documents such as the policy, the context analysis and the management review may need updating for ISO 9001:2026, and the 45001 content inside them stays as it is.

Q04

What will the new edition change?

Nothing we can state yet. This page is updated from the published standard itself, not from drafts or commentary about them.

Q05

Is OHSAS 18001 still valid?

No. It was withdrawn in 2021 and replaced by ISO 45001. A checklist that still asks for it is out of date.

Check what actually moved

If you hold several certificates, a short call sorts which ones face a transition and which do not.
