A one-day awareness course on ISO 14001:2026, the environmental management standard published in April 2026. It covers the clause requirements, how to identify environmental aspects and impacts, compliance obligations, and what changed from the 2015 edition.

One row of an environmental aspects register worked across five columns from activity to control, with the significance evaluation marked as the step that decides everything downstream.ACTIVITYSOLVENT DECANTASPECTVAPOUR RELEASEIMPACTAIR QUALITYSIGNIFICANCESCORED METHODCONTROLCLAUSE 8.1THE DECISION POINTEVERYTHING BELOW INHERITS ITWHAT SIGNIFICANCE DECIDESOBJECTIVESCLAUSE 6.2OPERATIONAL CONTROLCLAUSE 8.1EMERGENCY PLANSCLAUSE 8.2MONITORINGCLAUSE 9.1A DOWNLOADED REGISTER MAKES ALL FOUR DECORATIVE

ISO 14001:2026 awareness in one day sits at step 5 of the delivery cycle. You receive course materials and an attendance record.

01

The register everyone copies and nobody owns

Ask ten certified sites for their aspects and impacts register and several will hand you the same document with a different logo.

The aspects register in clause 6 is where ISO 14001 actually lives. Everything downstream, the objectives, the operational controls, the emergency arrangements, the monitoring, is decided by what that register says is significant. If the register was downloaded, everything below it is decorative.

The tell is easy to spot from the outside. A register listing energy use, water use and waste for a site whose real exposure is a bunded tank farm and a contractor who takes drums away on a flatbed. The generic entries are true; they are just not the ones that matter.

So the significance exercise runs on the delegates' own processes, and the method is written down rather than assumed. Two people in the room score the same aspect, compare, and argue about why the numbers differ. That argument is the training.

Templates, not handouts

01

An aspects and impacts register template

With a worked significance method, so the scoring can be explained to an auditor rather than defended.

02

A compliance obligations register template

Structured for the three categories: legal, permit and licence conditions, and obligations taken on voluntarily.

03

The workbook

Clause by clause in working language, with the evidence each clause produces noted against it.

04

A ITF certificate of completion

Per delegate, with the assessment result recorded against it.

04

By the end of the day

  1. 01

Tell an aspect from an impact, in their own area

Solvent decanting is the activity. Vapour release is its aspect. The effect on air quality is the impact. Weak registers blur the three and then control the wrong one.

    Session 3
  2. 02

    Apply a significance method consistently

So two assessors reach the same score, and the score can be explained six months later.

    Session 3
  3. 03

List the categories of compliance obligation on a Saudi site

National, municipal and, where they apply, industrial city requirements, permit and licence conditions, and voluntary obligations from client contracts and group policy.

    Session 3
  4. 04

Explain where the life cycle perspective changes a decision

It is not life cycle assessment. It is the point in procurement, design or disposal where a different choice was available.

    Session 5
  5. 05

State their role in emergency preparedness

Spill, release, fire. What they do, who they tell, and what gets recorded afterwards.

    Session 5
05

A prequalification pack in Jubail

A contractor bidding for maintenance work in Jubail Industrial City has been asked, in a client prequalification pack, for its environmental aspects register and its compliance obligations. It holds ISO 9001 and nothing environmental, and the register it has was downloaded.

We ran the day on the contractor's own activities: paint and solvent use, generator refuelling on client sites, and waste leaving in its own vehicles. Two supervisors scored the same aspect independently and reconciled the difference in the room.

The compliance obligations exercise separated national requirements from the industrial city's own and from the client's contract conditions, because the prequalification asked about all three.

The contractor ended up holding a draft aspects register built on its own work, a compliance obligations register structured in three categories, and a certificate per delegate.

06

Who should be in the room

The people who own the controls

HSE officers, facilities and maintenance staff who run the bunds, the drains, the waste yard and the generator.

  • Build a register that reflects your site and not a template
  • Know which of your controls are operational controls under clause 8.1
  • Recognise where an outsourced process is still your obligation
07

What buyers ask about 14001

Q01

What counts as a compliance obligation in Saudi Arabia?

Legal requirements from national, municipal and, where they apply, industrial city regulators, plus permit and licence conditions and obligations you have taken on voluntarily, such as client contract terms, group policies and industry codes. The course covers how to build the register and keep it current.

Q02

We already have ISO 9001. Does 14001 duplicate it?

The management clauses are largely shared, which is the point of the Harmonized Structure. What is genuinely new is environmental aspects and impacts, compliance obligations, emergency preparedness and response, and evaluation of compliance. Those four are the real work.

Q03

Is this the same as a sustainability or ESG course?

No. ISO 14001 is a management system standard about controlling your environmental impacts and meeting your obligations. ESG reporting is a different discipline with different frameworks and a different audience. Do not buy one expecting the other.

Q04

Do you cover waste contractor management?

Yes, under clause 8.1 control of outsourced processes. It is a common audit finding, usually because nobody can show where the waste went after it left the gate.

Q05

Is the certificate recognised?

It is an ITF certificate of completion, and it records that the participant attended and met the assessment criteria on the day. It is not an accredited qualification. It is the kind of evidence a management system asks for under ISO 9001 clause 7.2 and its equivalents. If your buyer or regulator names a certificate issued under an accreditation scheme, tell us at enquiry and we will say plainly whether ours fits.

Q06

Can you run it in Arabic?

Yes. Arabic, English, or Arabic delivery with English material, which is the usual request for a mixed room. Confirm the language when you book, because it decides which trainer and which handouts are scheduled.

Q07

Do you come to our site?

Yes, and it is the default. On your site the exercises run on your own documents and processes, and the participants lose no travel time. We need a room, a screen, and the participants released from the floor for the whole session.

Q08

How many people can attend?

Awareness courses work up to about 20. Courses with assessed practical work cap at about 12 to 15, so every person does the exercise rather than watching it. These caps are our teaching judgement, not an external rule.

Q09

Who delivers it?

Practising auditors. The people teaching these courses spend their working weeks inside factories, warehouses, kitchens and offices carrying out audits, and the examples in the room come from that work. The standard every trainer meets is set out on the trainers page.

Q10

What if someone misses a day, or does not pass?

There is no certificate for partial attendance or a failed assessment. The participant can join the missed day or retake the assessment on a later run, and we tell you which person and why. We would rather report a gap than issue a record that says something untrue.

ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 were both revised this year. If you hold both certificates, sequence the two transitions rather than running them separately, and we will map that with you before anyone quotes.
